Enjoy Liberec Like We Do

Liberec

No other regional metropolis is as close to the mountains as we are. You can hop on a tram in the centre and get off right at a [sjezdovka]. Or get on a bus and a few minutes later you'll be admiring the views from the ridgeline of the Jizera Mountains. There are also plenty of other things to do in Liberec, like visiting our outstanding zoo or the experiential science park.

The iconic building on the top of Mt. Ještěd was built from 1966-1973 and is certainly worth a visit. You can reach the futuristic [vysílač] and hotel by cable car right out of a Bond film. After completing your culinary mission in the local restaurant you can head back down. If you take a [koloběžka], it's one hell of a ride and you'll be sure to beat all the bad guys back to Liberec or picturesque Kryštofovo údolí.

Exotic animals have been kept at the Liberec Zoo for over one hundred years, making it the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic. The white tigers have given inspiration for the name of our hockey team, which is just as ferocious. Carnivorous plants, as well as ancient bonsai trees and the world's largest water lily thrive in the botanical garden. And vegetarians need not fear – in the centre we have several excellent vegan-friendly establishments.

Not everyone hears the call of the [divočina] that surrounds us. Those drawn more by science and technology will be in seventh heaven at the iQLANDIA science centre, where the finest minds are hard at work in the fight against [nuda] and delusion. The interactive exhibits here will have you traveling through time, discovering planets and galaxies in the 4K planetarium, conducting fun experiments in laboratories or talking with robots.

To maintain our mental and physical fitness we have a dense network of hiking and cycling trails and X-country skiing trails in the winter throughout the entire Jizera Range, which is named after the Jizera River. This is also the site of the most famous Czech X-country race, the Jizerská 50. The most beautiful views are from Mt. Smrk, Jizera or Smědava, for some real adrenaline try climbing the [žebříky] on Mt. Ořešník, and when you're ready for a sweet reward try the [borůvkové knedlíky] at the mountain chalets.
Glass and jewellery
Our [sousedé] from Jablonec nad Nisou also have plenty to be proud of. From Liberec, take the longest Czech intercity tram lime to admire world-renowned jewelry at the Museum of Glass and Jewelry. The tradition of glassmaking has thrived in this region for hundreds of years – this is the birthplace of Czech [křišťál], which is why we sometimes take some of this masterful craftsmanship home – a piece of jewelry or a chandelier or at least a [frťánek].

When we're not hiking around the mountains or buying something in the glassworks, you might find us with camera in hand at Frýdlant, a majestic medieval castle and Renaissance chateau, or in front of the Baroque church at the [klášter] in Hejnice or at the museum of folk nativity scenes in the [vesnička] of Kryštofovo údolí with its timbered houses. You can easily reach all of these magical places from Liberec by train.
